If this has been asked before or if my question is too stupid feel free to bludgeon me

I have an MSI kt7 pro2-a which uses the via kt133 chipset. what would happen if i threw in a thunderbird chip with a 133fsb setting?

I know my bios has settings for the fsb up to 133 and that the memory already runs @133. Would the kt133 chipset burn up at 133mhz? Am i crazy?

thnx

Most T-Birds were factory unlocked and I had a 1.4 T-Bird in KT7@1.4ghz 12.5x112fsb which is about the outside edge of fsb overclocking with the KT133 chipset unmodded anyways. Loosing the fsb is a bummer but at least you can still get the mhz, in fact had I flashed to a newer bios at the time with higher multpliers I could have most likely ran it@1.54ghz as it did on the K7S5A I had.

I wasn't aware of this fact. Was this a later version of the tbird? I always thought you had to connect the L1 bridges (or was that L2?) to unlock them. My 1.1 tbird did, at least.

1.2-1.4 266fsb t-birds were race ready for certain as I had several and all were adjustable through the bios with no pencil trick needed.

okay, wait a minute... are you saying I could buy the 266 athlon chip rated for say 1.4 ghz then still make it perform at the 1.4ghz speed by adjusting the multiplier? ahh grasshopper is learning. good idea because the 1.2 and 1.3 ghz 100fsb athlons have dissappeared from pricewatch. and the 1.4 ghz @100fsb is over 100$!!! now a 1.4ghz @ 133 fsb is significantly cheaper.

DAPUNISHER wins the prize for most helpful idea so far! Thanks! :D

you can run any athlon xp on a kt133 board if you know how to make it work

i've run a 2400+ at 2.53ghz on my a7v
the fsb speed won't go much over 100 so don't even bother
i think the highest I could get the fsb fully stable was like 105 or 108

but yeah you can mod the cpu to unlock any mults you need remapping the dip switch settings

WOW :Q So does anyone know how high the latest msi 6330 bios multiplier settings are? From the website, I see that my bios is the same for the k7t turbo2 which supported the xp 2600+ at a multiplier of 16. I'm guessing it allowed for overclocking so maybe I'll have a highest setting of 17 or 18? That's one fast athlon on my ancient kt133 board! DYNOMITE

this is probably a stupid question: so the xp's don't require ddr system memory? i'm going to have to weigh my choices carefully to get the best bang for the buck here. I could pick up a new mb/cpu combo + ddr memory for some of the xp chip prices out there and then have the added bonus of a full on ddr system. hmmm. thoughts anyone?

i was in the same position then i got an nf2/2500+ combo
i had run many athlons/xps on my kt133 board
but i got sick of having to cut the bridges on every new chip I got to make it work and the fsb was too slow
so i just figured i'd uprade

for what it matters my kt133 3dmark scores and gaming performance were comparable to my nf2 motherboard with all components the same

but i sure like having a nice new motherboard

i found a guy here at work with an old duron 600 i can use to flash the bios to see what multiplier settings i can get. i think i'll try it tonight! oh boy this is just like christmas! cool thing is, i bought the athlon750/mb combo for under 100 bucks about 2.5 yrs ago. and now i could potentially stick something 3-4 times as fast in for ~60 bucks! COOL AMD rocks. I'll have to see if my current heatsink will work for the xp chips. i can't remember off the top of my head but i think it's one of the taisol brand.

Thanks for the help everyone!

HELP!!!

OK... I flashed the bios with the borrowed (actually duron) 600. But the bios only shows cpu multiplier settings up to 13.5. Which is strange because my board is listed as supporting the 1.4ghz athlon 100fsb chips. Would this be because I was using a multiplier locked duron 600. Would the bios show higher multiplier settings if i stuck an xp 1800 in there? I guess I could always run the 1800 at 1.35instead of the 1.5ghz. Thoughts, ideas, suggestions, pearls of wisdom? :(

Thanks for any help.
