Athlon 1700 xp vcore core voltage 1.80 why?

Yes I did a search. yes I read the posts.
I have an athlon 1700 xp
asus a7v266-e.
the lowest the bios lets me set is 1.80v though the recommended vcore is 1.75v
why? I heard stability but i would assume that jamming more voltage in would increase heat
and thus decrease stability.
The a7v266-e motherboard has jumpers which i set to 1.75v yet the darn motherboard still reads 1.80v (i took it out of the jumperfree mode)
My processor runs at 50C at rest but i am so used to lower p3 and p4 temps. yes i know AMD says
that 80-90c is critical. I am just chicken, why won't the voltage go lower than 1.80v even with the jumper set lower. Is jamming extra voltage to the CPU also DECREASING lifespan? as is the higher 50C temps?

My goal is the fastest yet most stable processor that last for 3 years min. I will take STABILITY over speed. any thoughts or bios settings to maximize speed yet KEEP or Increase stability.

Don't worry it's your motherboard fault. Asus mobo usually behave like those (Vcore and temp ).
As long as your system it's not a problem.

I have your identical system and your identical "problem". However your fan is better than mine : my cpu reaches at the maximum load the temperature of 61 C , in a low load situation it reaches 55 C . I know that is a little high temperature , but my system works fine , and so you can stay very safe . I tried also to change manually the jumpers at 1.75 v but , like you say , the cpu will work ever at 1.8 v . And remember : when a cpu is too hot , it gives a lot of errors (ex. unrecoverable errors under windows), and this happens much before of the real damage of the cpu.
However i am actually building my dream : a water cooled system !

mx OCed XP1700 to 1900 dotn even reach 35C under full load--well that'c according the bios reading which pretty inaccurate...
but my heatsink is barely even warm to hand touch--compared to my old regular athlon 1.4ghz

The 1.8v reading u r getting is normal. Most mobo will add 0.05v-0.1v to the vcore set to improve stability. As long as the bios/jumper is set at 1.75v...u'll be fine.

Wht HSF u r using. If at 50c..ur PC is stable...don't bother. Even w/ a temp of 70C...ur CPU will last more than 3 years. :D

I am using the stock HSF the amd supplies in the retail box; it does get warm to the touch.
by the way, any of you who have the asus a7v266e (where did you get the I/O shield from. my motherboard box didn't have one and my case didn't come with one that will work.
