hi.

quick question. is the retail heatsink and fan for the 1.4athlon (266) really THAT bad? i've been reading everywhere that it is.. even if you dont o/c? which doesnt make sense... but anyway, in my case, i'm just planning on buying the ecs K7S5A board and gettin a 1.4 chip. i'm in NO way planning to overclock (i've read you can't with that board anyway). my question is.. is it safe to go ahead and buy the retail processor that comes with fan/hs or do i have to go ahead and buy the thermalright sk-6 with a oem processor ($30 more)?

ty!

I have a couple retail 1.4's that will go in a system soon. The heatsinks are the biggest heatsinks I have ever seen in person, period. I wouldn't worry about them.

If your not overclocking then the retail HSF is definitely perfectly reliable and you should have absolutely no problems.

AMD warranties the processor will run perfectly at rated clockspeed for 3 years with that very same HSF, that's your guarnatee that it is definitely enough to cool the processor.
I sincerely doubt AMD is in the habit of guaranteeing their HSF units to run the processor eliably for 3 years if they cannot.

I wouldnt advise it for overclocking, and the temperatures will be slightly on the high side... but when run within specifications it is without a doubt perfectly fine.
I've built many systems with AMD's retail fans.

You could also go here since the question is the same. You ought to be able to get the same type answers.

I would think that if AMD is packaging the hsf with their processor and offering a 3 year warranty, the hsf would be able to handle the processor. At least common sense would dictate that...

I have the retail HSF and it is fine. I even left the thermal pad on b/c I am lazy. I idle around 46- reach 52/53 under full load. I even bumped the FSB up to 142.7 for a while w/ CPUcool and it was perfectly stable. Temps only increased a couple of degrees. So I wouldn't worry at all
