Is there any compelling reason to get a 1.2MP chip today vs. getting one of the Athlon 4s when they come out in a month or two?

Other than the availability of the Palomino core NOW?

orlbamf,

Unless you plan on running an SMP rig, I don't see the point. Quite frankly, I don't see the point of an SMP rig unless you plan on running a server or are doing CPU intensive work with a program that supports MP threading. There just aren't enough programs with built in SMP support right now to justify the cost. I'd sit tight until the faster Athlon 4's and the newer mobo's to support them come out .

Umm, I need to disagree with you there. The Athlon MP is just a Palomino that is certified for use in the MP chipset boards. It will work fine on most KT133A boards and the newer 760 DDR boards. The AthlonMP @ 1.2ghz will almost match a regular Thunderbird core @ 1.4ghz. The desktop Athlon 4 will be the exact same core as the mobile Athlon4 and desktop MP. The only difference between the MP and the mobile Athlon 4 is the MP has Power Now disabled. The MP chip is faster, cooler running, and the exact same as the future Athlon 4's. I've got one on the way for my 8K7A...which officialy supports the MP/Palomino with the newest bios BTW.. :)

I just gotta ask....

Is that the 1606 or the 1607 bios that lets you do this??

And is there any reason for us to flash if we are not getting the new CPU??

Thx, H-A

Actually, I think both do. The 1606 is the latest "official" bios from Epox, while the 1607 is still "beta". Also, even without the latest bios, the Palamino will still work, it's just not recognized properly.

"And is there any reason for us to flash if we are not getting the new CPU??"

Well, the newer 1607 bios adds FSB settings all the way up to 250mhz now. :Q

What new MBs are coming out specifically to support the Athlon 4s? I guess mainly boards that are built on a fixed Via KT266 chipset since AMD doesn't particularly want to be in that business. But those are just rehashes of what is available now. I guess we'll see when the 4s come out in force.
