athlete & athletic

I was personally stunned today when someone equated coordination with athleticism. But on the chance that I might be the only one with this opinion I decided to make this poll. I really don't see how a person can feel that someone who plays darts is an athlete. I know there is skill involved but to me physical strength, stamina, speed, agility are more relevant qualifiers.

is poker a sport? Its on ESPN isn't it?

As for the OP's question, I for one don't think so though. When someone says I have an athletic body build, I don't imagine a bowler or pool player's body (unless its jeanette lees I guess).

I consider them athletes in their own rights, but in the examples you listed, they are not true atheletes.

I also equate a true athelete with someone who can pick up multiple sports and still be better than average at most of them. And by sports, I mean baseketball, baseball, football, soccer, etc.

the activities used in the poll are more like games to me, as opposed to sports. but i'm on the fence here anyway. i'm a golfer and i know that being in better shape can / would improve my game - so i do see the athletic side of it as well.

but playing darts... bowling.. etc... people can be coordinated and be good at them, regardless of whether or not they're athletic. they can be fatties and still be coordinated... fatties can still hit triple 20 every time.

I consider an athlete someone who is presently active in a sport in a major way(race meets, jv basketball, over 30 softball league that plays 3x a week).

A person that is athletic to me means someone who can pick just about any sport easily & be pretty decent at it in no time. Coordination has something to do with it, but it has more to do with being naturally fast, quick, being able to jump high, strong, in great shape, etc., all rolled up into one.

Golf is a grey area to me. Most of the things I listed are games that I have actually at times played better when drunk than sober (once got a 190 bowling while competely drunk). Golf, I can barely do that sober.

You dont think stamina, coordination, and agility are needed for Darts?

Let me tell you what most of our drills were composed of as a defensive back in college.
Coordination and acceleration skills. Most drills were not over 10 yards of distance and all had to do with quick reaction coordinated movements.

No I don't, what is needed is a pitcher of beer, and some other people.

Q: would you consider people who play pool, darts, pinball athletes?

Short answer; no.

Long answer; how in the hell could anyone consider buffalo-wing scarfing, beer pitcher guzzling, plaid shirt wearing barfly's to be athletes?

No coordination or agility? That is amazing, do you plan on hitting the board on a regular basis? Or just toss it up and hope for teh best?

Agility: Ability to start, stop, and move the body quickly in different directions.

coordination sure, agility and stamina, no.

no, because those games are mainly for non-athletic people.

I mean look at the top competitors in those bar games - definately not athletic.
