Atheros SL-5354MP mini-PCI client and 802.11a

I recently installed a Atheros SL-5354MP mini-PCI card in my Dell 600M laptop and all went well till I got my new Access Point, it has dual radios in it, 802.11b-g/A but have not had success in connecting to it. My Atheros client utility shows the power mode for 802.11a in a GREYED out status and not adjustable. Does anyone have suggestions for getting this to work?
