Speaking at a gathering of local atheists, humanists, freethinkers and other nontheists in a chemistry lecture hall at Stanford University, David Silverman, president of American Atheists, a national advocacy group for nontheists, announced Tuesday (May 6) that his New Jersey-based organization would launch the first television channel dedicated to atheism in July.

“Why are we going to television?” he asked the audience, a mix of about 100 students and people from the local community. “It’s part of our strategy of going where we are not.”

Silverman, 49, said the television channel, which will be available via Roku, an Internet streaming player that attaches to televisions like a cable box, will run atheist content seven days a week, 24 hours a day. He estimated it will reach 7 million households and will be free, at least initially.

The channel, which Silverman did not name, is believed to be the first channel dedicated exclusively to nontheism. There are more than 100 Christian and four Jewish television stations broadcasting in the United States.

The channel will air video of previous atheist events, such as footage from past American Atheist conventions and speakers at 2012‘s Reason Rally in Washington, D.C., as well as content provided by atheist video bloggers and other atheist groups.

In addition, the channel will air segments of “The Atheist Viewpoint,” a show produced two decades ago by Madalyn Murray O’Hair, American Atheists’ deceased founder and plaintiff in the 1963 landmark Supreme Court case that removed Bible readings from public schools.

“We are envisioning a lot of different content from many different atheist content creators,” said Dave Muscato, American Atheists’ director of communications. “We are hoping to sign on many other atheists who create videos currently on YouTube and other places.”

Reaction from the Stanford crowd was enthusiastic; a few began to applaud and a ripple of discussion buzzed through the room after Silverman’s announcement. Tom Manger, an atheist from Pleasanton, Calif., asked Silverman whether he considered creating an atheist radio channel. Manger said he has a playlist of more than 1,000 songs that are atheist in theme, nature or origin.

“It’s a possibility,” Silverman said.

Interesting, but I don't think they will have a big enough audience honestly to make this thing work..lol They really can't compete with so many Religious channels. But we shall see.

If it is anything like a theme of information that Bill Maher did "Religiosity" which I thought was very good, and entertaining, I might watch it.

Unless they plan on a lot of science documentaries it would get dull pretty quick.

GOD CHECK! Still no god. Okay, what's up next on WWND?

LOL, but atheism isn't a religion. No...

This is hilarious. Idiots that get excited about atheism are as ridiculous as any god worshiping buffoon.

LOL I think that is soooo true...but I guess we shall see. It really would have to be like maybe open discussions with the audience, maybe call ins, and throw in history and docu's and such to keep it going. But it might end up turning out like a "Judge Judy" sensationalistic type show where you watch just because you like to see the bickering and train wrecks..hee hee

If you're looking at atheism in a very narrow sense, as merely non belief in gods, then obviously it's not exciting. If you would consider the value of truth generally, critical inquiry, questioning authority etc., then maybe you wouldn't need to use the dreaded "i" word. So mean. :(

There is nothing in religion that prevents you "considering the value of truth", "critical inquiry" and so forth.

These are a bunch of loons no different than religious fundies.

I don't see how this could possibly succeed. Most atheists simply aren't evangelical enough to care to watch a channel that tries to spread atheism. Now if they just made it an actual science learning channel, I would totally watch reruns of science shows.

If nothing else, this thread has had some good humor in it so far.
I now want to go camping to sing that version of Kumbayah! ... except for the going camping part.

Trinity is a trainwreck I can watch over and over. It's like Jim and Tammy Faye on acid.

This.

The tragedy is that channels which used to have actual educational value have largely succumbed to the short American attention span and given up on actual science.

If it identifies its self as Atheist first and foremost, then I think its dumb. I know dumb atheists and I know smart ones as well.

I would much rather have a channel that is about logic vs Atheism.

Cognitive dissonance would kill a logic channel.

That guy was pretty much exactly what I had in mind when I was typing my post. I love watching shows like Through the Wormhole. And I haven't yet but need to watch Cosmos.

There's already a Atheist radio broadcast in Austin, TX, the Atheist Experience. Matt Dillahunty is quite the knowledgeable debater who is very entertaining to listen to on Youtube.

LOL HAHA! That's actually true though. I was really into all the atheist youtube videos, debates and podcasts etc, but then it got boring because WTF is there to talk about? I'd rather listen to KFI AM640 and play BF4.

I know about that show as well. But at least Christians call in, that what makes the show entertaining.

There is nothing remotely interesting about lacking belief. Perhaps they will spend all the time bashing religion. That draws a crowd.

The radio broadcast for that Atheist show in Austin is debating about religion more or less in a short compact series that isn't a 24/7 channel. Debating occasionally about beliefs can be interesting. Trying to make a channel dedicated to Atheism is stupid. I'm an Atheist and think the whole concept of a channel for it is stupid. I don't need reaffirmation of my atheism or a support network. The vast majority of atheists because of logical dictates and nothing else.

Atheism is really one step away from becoming a full-scale religion. They meet in large, annual conventions, are working on their own religious network, and in about 10-20 years, they'll populate street corners and shopping malls.

It about time y'all come to your senses.
