Hullo,

This may sound like a stupid so I am sorry in advance. What is the difference between the Athalon MP and the Athalon XP? I can't find any information regurding this difference. Thank you for your answers in advance. I am very interested in the differences.

Put super simple:

MP's are approved by AMD for use in multiprocessor systems

XP's are not

The chips are really identical though...so it is a question of "will i shell out the extra cash just to feel good about my dual cpu system"

There are no architectural differences between the Athlon MP and Athlon XP. They both have the same FSB (Front Side Bus) running at 266MHz. They both have the same amount of on-die L1 and L2 cache at 384K.

The only difference (according to AMD) is that Athlon MP's go through an extra stage of validation, to make sure that they can work in SMP (dual processor) mode. Athlon XP processors do not go through this stage of validation, but the vast vast majority of people that have run Athlon XP's in SMP mode have been very successful, so judge for yourself.

Are you looking at a dual processor configuration for an upgrade of some type MrSanderzX?

Wow Jake you sure are quick one.

Unless you have lots of money to waste, want to change the multiplier, or are looking for a dual CPU system (1 and 3 kinda go together), then the XP is a better choice.

Yes, Jake I know why you said it. And no I am not flaming, I just dont think it is right to criticize people due to typos.

it's not a typo when you do it three times, and it wasn't criticism, just a friendly correction. he also spells Athlon incorrectly in his rig profile. if i were repeatedly spelling something incorrectly i would appreciate it if someone would inform me. unlike some people, i come to these forums to help people, and to get help in return. i don't think that you have any right to criticize me for doing that. and as i said, don't call me jake.

Whoa....Not anymore...XP no longer = MP, effective with the 2000+ and above. AMD has cut yet another bridge to foil those such as we who would be thrifty in dual setups. Check this out for documentation:

XP not MP (includes a fix)

Thank you for your kind correction, I am greatful for it. Though a kind thing to do would have been to send me personal message to me rather than correct me in public like you felt the need to do. Thank you once again though because I am aware I have a spelling problem. No big deal, no flame wars here. Thank you guys for your help.

I am looking to build a new system, but I am just waiting until I get back from Rome this summer. :D

At this point I am thinking about the Soyo Dragon Plus, but I am not sure if that will be the situation when I get off my a-- and get around to making the rig. I hope that something better has come out by then. I like the features the Soyo offers, I just wish it had USB 2.0. (correct me if I am wrong. I am sure EdipisReks will be more than happy. :))

hehe

I would wait for the kt333a boards to come out if you wont be building in a while. Otherwise I would get a kt333 board (I dont know if soyo has released their's yet). I just bought an Abit KR7A and will let you know how I like it when it gets in.

Stop bickering guys, it isn't necessary.

MrSanderzX exactly what are you going to be using your system for? Gaming, web surfing, 3D modeling? It'll give us a better idea as to which motherboard you should get.

Well, as a minor social commentary, it is pretty funny how defensive and angry people get when someone points out a minor grammer problem.

Personally when I mis-pronounce or mis-spell something I would prefer it if someone would correct me. It's not cool at all to just "let things slide since this is just the internet dooood".

Hell, I used to walk around when I was twelve pronouncing foliage "foilage". It was sure nice when someone pointed out to me how stupid I was sounding.

As to your processor quandry, there is really no reason to go with the MP at all, as it is pretty much the same chip. If you really aren't in a hurry, then I would wait for the new processors that will start showing up middle to end of next month... even if you stick with an XP chip then you will get a much better price.

LOL, when I was twelve, I didnt even know what foliage was. But if I did, I probably wouldve pronounced it foilage.

I agree that waiting for the T-Bred might be smart. But they might be expensive, seeing as how the new XP 2100 costs like $300

I really didn't want to start any war or flames. :( What I said was just honest and I wasn't offended by EdipisReks. I took the comment in good humor and went and fixed it on my system rigs. I am not sure why he got so bent out of shape by my joke, that is all it was, intended in good humor. This box will be used gaming mostly, I am thinking about doing modeling again, but it has been awhile. It will be used for my digital photography though. My real concern is gaming because I am pretty sure my P-III can handle any digital photography I want to do with it.

I am in no hurry to get a system and will be waiting until after July 24 before I decide to start-up a new rig. I havn't done much modding or anything myself for a system, so I am looking forward to getting a chance to have some fun and be creative. Even though I don't fancy myself the most creative person.

Just to once again clear up what is going on, I didn't want to start anything and hope that no one is mad. I am new to posting on forms and such so I don't want any conflict.

Is english your primary language? I'm not sure because some of your syntax indicates that it might not be.

This is just some friendly criticism but you might consider running your posts through a grammer and spell checker like MS Word before posting, in the posts you have made in this thread you have made quite a few errors (beyond the spelling of Athlon) and unfortunately posting with lots of these mistakes can cause people to assume that you are less intelligent than you probably are.

There is a time to back off. I did just make a post to ask a question not get flamed for my grammer. Now may be a good time to back off. Yes english is my primary language. Not that I need to defend myself to you, but I do make errors and tend to rely on MS Word. Unfortunatly at work I do not the option of using MS Word.

Like I said once again not looking to start a flame war, but if making comments like you did makes you feel better better than someone be my guest to continue. I take crap from people like that all day at work.

MrSanderzX

Pardon the anal nature of this post. I understand you are only trying to help gunf1ghter.

Also, it could be the fact that we are typing. I constantly find myself deleting words and retyping them because they werent right. I have already done it at least 5 times in this post.

If you wont be building until July, then I dont think an athlon xp or mp will be what you want. You are better off waiting a while to buy if you wont be building for a long time. New stuff will come out, and prices for current stuff will drop a lot.

That is what I was going to do. :) I am not sure what happend here it just seemed to get away from topic. Anyway, thank you for all your help. I decided that I would rather go to Rome, Italy before building a new computer. It just doesn't seem worth the money or the time to do it right now. I was only curious about the XP / MP difference. Thank you for clearing that up long ago everyone. I am off work now. Good Night.
