I know the old PATA interface needs to be ATAPI compliant to run a cd/dvd drive. Is this the same with SATA? I saw sata card claiming to be ATAPI compliant..

I only got 4 sata ports on my mobo, 0 pata. so i can use any of my old drives..

So my choices are to get pci atapi controller and use my old cd/dvd drive

or get an addin SATA controller and get a sata cd/dvd drive..

Like sata better but whatever works..

Just an FYI .. I have had a SATA burner quite a while, but am happy I had a USB external drive. After I set my bios to strictly SATA, some "bootable" cd/dvds won't boot except to the external <fwiw>

I have 4 sata port, 0 ports left, so if i want to add another one cd/dvd, i need to get another controller. either i get a sata controller and get sata drive or get a pata controller and use my existing drives

wait what?

Get a SATA DVD burner and plug it directly to your SATA ports... they only cost about 20$ now.
Something like this one:
