I've got a Tyan Trinity 400 motherboard which runs ATA66. I want to get a new ATA100 drive. Can I get a PCI ATA100 Controller Card to use with the new drive, or do I need to buy a new motherboard that supports ATA100? Thanks!
You can use an ATA100 controller card to operate the drive at ATA100, or if you wish you can use the motherboards IDE ports and operate the drive at ATA66.
ATA100 is backwards compatible with the previous ATAXX specifications.
<< there is very little performance to be gained by using ata100 instead of ata66 >>
You've got to look at all the pieces to the puzzle before you make that statement! The IDE controller on the motherboard in my son's PC just supported ATA66, so when his ATA66/5400rpm HDD recently crashed, I got him a Promise ATA100 card with a new ATA100/7200rpm Maxtor drive. He tells me he sees a very noticeable improvement. Of course, some (probably most) of that improvement comes from the reduced latency of the new 7200rpm drive vs his 3-yr old 5400rpm drive.
I think you might find that is the drive, not specifically the interface. The DiamondMax drives are the second fastest IDE on the market, with the IBM GXP's ever so slightly faster.
