my poor old 1.2 gb hd has died. I am looking at buying a 15 gb Quantum Fireball 7200 rpm ata66.
Will this work on my ata33 mb. I can't afford a new mb as well so figured I would upgrade one bit at a time.
Yes, an ATA66 hard-drive will work in with an ATA33 controller. You will be limited to ATA33 speeds, though. It is unlikely that you will notice the difference between ATA66 and ATA33 controllers.
The Quantum Fireball LM Plus will automatically detect and start working at ATA33 without any help needed. I think that with some other brands (IBM?) you need to download and run a small program to make their ATA 66 drives work at ATA33.
I have the 20Gb Fireball Plus LM and I love it. It is way faster than my CR was. Boot up time is considerably shorter. The drive is noisy but I like to hear when my hard disk is accessed.
