I bought an Intel VC820 Vancouver Slot I mobo. According to The Specs , the board has built-in support for ATA-66. Would it be able to run my ATA-100 hard drive or should I stick with the crappy Promise ATA100 pci controller card? (I want to avoid using the controller card because it makes my main drive G: in Win2k) Any help is appreciated, thanks!

You can run your hard drive on the ata66, but it will only run at 66 not 100 like your drive was made for. If you do not mind this, go for it. Your hard drive will be fine, only not as fast.

darkman is right, the ata100 drive will have no problem running on an ata66 controller, also.... decrease in performance will be very small, the reason is even the fastest ata100 hard drives only have transfer rates in the 40's and the ata66 can take that easy, the only thing your ata66 wont be able to handle is the burst speeds of your hard drive (since they do sometimes get over 66)

but all in all i doubt you would even notice the decrease in performance by using an ata100 drive on an ata66 board

No difference, but the card is useful for attaching more than 4 drives and keeping each a separate master, 66 or 100. The 100 standard is pretty pointless for non-raid setups. It's a way to make people feel that their drives are getting faster, even though transfer and seek times aren't changing much (although density is).
