Two things:

First, beware that you will need an ATA/66 or 100 cable to connect the card to your drive, and I'd bet at $10 it's not included here.

Second: I dont know what you mean about soundblaster problems. Three of my computers have various soundblaster cards, and all have promise controllers, and I've never had any problem.

Yes, I had a similar problem a couple of hours ago.
I was trying out the beta Windows Whistler on a second drive and couldn't figure out why my promise card wasn't working.
The soundblaster live and promise card was IRQ 5 .

I disabled the soundblaster so that the promise would work until I can fiddle with it some more.

Its the soundblaster problem. Read up at creativelabs.com all you have to do is go into bios, and set irq to a legacy/ non PnP device. The problem is that soundblaster cards use 2 irq's. 5 is the problem, so tell your bios to reserve 5 and you should have no problems.

i have a 5.1 platinum, and promise ata100 by the way.

If its autodetecting it again every time, then you're removing it and not disabling it. Try right clicking on it and disabling it, this may solve your problem.

No problems here with Windows 2000, Promise Ultra 66, and SB Live! Platinum 5.1, (all my PCI slots are sharing the same IRQ, because I'm in ACPI mode ... works fine for me!)

promise is pretty much the only guy on the block in terms of ATA cards. maxtors are just rebadged promise cards.
