I'm trying to put in a new hard drive Seagate 120 Gb, 7000.7 in old computer. Bios wasn't recognizingInstalled new hard drive so installed ata133 pci card as workaround. However, installation instructions assume windows already loaded. Computer still will not recognize hard drive, although now when it reboots it does an IDE scan. Instructions for PCI card assume windows xp already installed, but my xp recovery disk stops when it cannot detect hard drive. Any suggestions?

Yeah. When the XP install FIRST starts (when you first see the blue), tap F6 a bunch (at the bottom it'll say hit F6). When it doesn't say hit F6 anymore, stop tapping it. When all those drivers finish loading, it'll ask for a floppy with drivers on it to be inserted. Pop in a floppy with the ATA card's drivers, and you should be good to go.

Also: you don't really need to tap it, I just say that because I'd rather hit it too much than have it not recognize the one time I hit it and sit through the install thing again. :)

Here's my problem, the drivers came on a cd and I've tried making a floppy from the cd but can't. Then I went online and tried to download drivers and that hasn't worked either. I get the message "The file textsetup.oem could not be found" when I hit enter after inserting the floppy drive (when instructed to do so). Any suggestions?

Make sure all the driver files are in the root of the floppy (ie A:\, not A:\Drivers).

Extract the IDE controller's driver files to a floppy - they must all be in the root. You only need the driver files which are maybe 7 or 8 files. For example my drivers have a .CAT, .INF, .SYS, .VXD, .SYS .OEM and .CPL file. Yours may vary.

Don't copy any text, PDF or SETUP.EXE files.

There may even be a floppy creator utility that comes with your drivers.
