Hey,
is an ata100 hard drive backwards compatible? will it run on a 33/66 ata channel? i put one in my iwill raid mb kk266r, and it ran fine in the raid channel...put it in the ide channel and it ran sluggish and maxed my cpu out....if it is compatible, what must I do to get it to run normal on the ata33/66 channel? thanks..t

Yes it's backword compatable, will take a performance hit if not on a ata 100 controller though.

100% backwards compatible. Your not likely to notice much if any difference between ATA66 and ATA100 with today's hard drives. Hell, transfer rates are barely exceeding what ATA33 can offer.

I just can't figure out then why the difference when putting it to the ide channel...I even reinstalled Win2k with it and when I went to do something, like copy files or something, that drive would bog the whole shebang down...everything was in slow motion and it maxed my cpu to 100 percent...weird.....definitely returning this drive and getting another plus 40...thanks again..t

I don?t know what your motherboard is but the sluggish HD is possible due to not loading a driver, Via 4-1 maybe? I have had ATA100 averaging just over 1 meg/s transfer (very very slow) due to driver screw ups.

Sounds like software to me, check your drivers! Your via 4in1's(Via chipset of course)they are at version 4.29 viahardware check the drivers section for other drivers as well, also make sure you have DMA enabled, and check your cable. Otherwise your new drive may exhibit the same behavior.
