ATA100 vs ATA133

ATA133 is faster than ATA100, ATA133 is newer than ATA100, & ATA133 IMO is just marketing since no Parallel ATA hard drive can take advantage of the speed ATA133 offers over ATA100. Well maybe in RAID 0 but I'm not so sure about that.

Performance difference ... eh maybe 1% or even less.

Good, that is reassuring. I just bought an ata100 drive without even considering that feature.

Another related question: will a 8.5ms seek time have noticeable speed increases over a 8.9ms seek time drive?

Doubt it but I wouldn't totally trust manufacturer specs cause each manufacturer or model may be tested differently to which it's specs are listed as.

Best bet would be to look for benchmarks/comparisons between the 2.

i.e. storagereview.com or the like

There might be a slight difference as the drive with 133 would likely be newer with perhaps higher areal density. But probably not noticeable in normal use - just artificial benchmarks.
.bh.

ATA133 is just Maxtor marketing isn't it? No one else uses the term do they?

There is little difference between ATA66/100/133 in real world performance. 7200rpm drives are faster than 5400rpm drives though, and you will notice that.

AFAIK Maxtor was the first manufacturer to push that spec out. and to my knowledge the only hard drive manufacturer to do so.

I bought a maxtor ata133 drive. Its pretty good but drove me round the bend for awhile. It made a loud clicking sound when in use (not the horrible screeching, grinding sound when drives fail just the sounds of the drive heads parking).
If you get the same sound go to maxtor support and get them to email you thier amset utility. I got that and its as quiet as my old seagate.

Doh sorry just realised you got the ata100 one, dont know if they have this prob. sorry
