i am looking to get a new hard drive. my motherboard has a ata 100 controler and i have 4 devices ofn it, a dvd, cdr, and 2 hard drives. in order to get a new drive i will have to add a pci ata 100 controler card. My question refers to the speed of the card. i know it says ata 100, but i am not sure if that means the speed between the 4 devices on the card, or say a cdr on the mobo and a hard drive on the card. in other words, is the controler card limited in speed by the speed of the pci, if so is this a notable difference in accectable data flow speed? thanks for any help

the onboard controllers on your mobo are on a pci bus, no, the simplest way to explain it, is the pci adapter will basically be just like your existing ide controllers .. no the drives will not be hindered by the pci bus, as it runs on a pci bus anyway .. hope this helps ..

Put your hard drives on the card as they are about 10% faster( it seems) than the onboard variety.

that's because the onboard ide is behind (if you will) the south bridge, and pci is along side (if you will) the south bridge.
