ata to sata drive

I'm using ata drive. I'm thinking of upgrading to sata drive. Is it possible to clone the drive inorder to avoid reinstalling os, programs, files, etc.?

Here are a few options.

1) Make an image of your current HDD
2) Use the HDD mfg's cloning tool

FWIW I use Ghost 2003 on a floppy to clone IDE to IDE & IDE to SATA.
