Here's my question:
Can I use an ATA 33 Hard Drive on a Promise ATA 100 channel on the Asus A7V? (I know it will only run at ATA33)
If so, would I have to use an ATA66/100 cable or could I use an ATA33 cable?
Thanks.

Yes, it will work ATA100 controllers are backwards compatible with ATA33 drives. I'm fairly certain that you can use either cable - if you have an ATA33 cable, I know for a fact this will work. But I'm also pretty certain that an ATA66 cable will work with an ATA33 drive too (never tried this though).

You can use either cable.

I've got a DVDRom in DMA mode 2 (aka ATA33) on an 80wire cable and it works fine, so I imagine a hard drive in DMA mode 2 would work on an 80wire cable as well as my DVDRom would

ATA 16 thru 100 is compatible. Whatever speed the slowest divice works at, is what they all will work at.

ATA 16 port
ATA 100 drive
ATA 33 CDROM
= ALL at ATA 16

ATA 66 port
ATA 100 drive
ATA 33 CDROM
= ALL at ATA 33
