ATA/133 controller card error at bootscreen

I bought an Ultra ATA/133 PCI controller card to unlock the full capacity of my Maxtor 250 GB HD, and after I installed the card, I turned my computer on and got an error at the boot-screen which says the controller card isn't being initialized. I bypassed the error at first to install the driver for the card anyway, but everytime I reboot I get the same error. I've tried downloading & installing Windows XP SP1 to address this problem, but it didn't fix it either. I've tried switching the controller card to a different PCI slot as, but same error. The error reads exactly this: "ERROR... Expansion ROM not initialized - PCI Mass storage controller in SLOT 1... Bus:01, Device:08, Dunction:00" My computer's specs. are: HP Pavilion ['01], Intel Celeron 701 MHz, 320 MB RAM, Windows XP PRO.

Have any free IRQ's?

Keep in mind you're probably not unlocking much of anything. Most BIOSes within the past several years, at least through a BIOS update, can use greater than 137GB drives. Unless you're only able to use ATA66 mode, the ATA133 mode isn't going to be any faster.

One tech doc on HP's site for the Proliant indicates it's because the board does not support more than a certain number of bootable devices, including IDE ports, NICs, et cetera. Maybe the Pavilion is the same way. It does indicate that a BIOS update will fix the Proliant so maybe it will fix the Pavilion. The error isn't an indication of a failure, just that it isn't being activated. A similar message appears if you have such a card but no drives installed on it, or a SCSI card with no bootable devices; the BIOS isn't loaded unless something is being booted on it.
