ata 100 maxtor drive and controller card problem

Hi I just bought a 30 gig maxtor ata 100 drive (very quiet) and a maxtor ultra ata 100 pci adapter card (came with the drive). For some reason windows 2000 has the write cahe disabled and greyed out. Is there a way to enable write caching for the drive. I ran sisoft and got a score of 14,500. But when I connect my drive to the motherboard and have write cache enabled for my drive I get a score of 17,790. If I can enable write caching when my drive is connected to the adapter card I'm sure I would see a performance increase. By the way my card is actually a promise card I guess maxtor just put their name on it. Thanks for any help
