Ok I have an X1800XT in a DFI RDX200 MB (a PITA MB) and loaded up catalyst control center and noticed that its saying the temps are idling at about 50C and sometimes reaching 55C, this is with nothing running.. the fan seems to be spinning and nothing is obstructing airflow, I even have the cpu heatsink blowing in the opposite direction of the card.. I noticed there is a 3 pin connector on the card but I dont think its for the heatpipe fan since that fan is already preconnected.

Mine idles at the same temps, you are fine...

Wow, my CPU is an Athlon FX-57 and it runs at 34c.. either the X1800XT is indeed a beast or their heatsink design isn't very good..

Actually I dont think those are bad idle temps at all I think even GTX cards are near 50c idle as well....Dont worry about it....If load temps are past the 80's then maybe...

GPU's tend to run hotter than CPU's.

 FX-57 at 34C? what cooling do you have. my 3700 SD is idle at 32C, I think it should be lower.

You guys are lucky, my A643000+ runs idle at 42 and up to 54 at full load :<

His processor is clocked 600 mhz higher than yours. 2 degrees above your temp isn't higher than what it should be.

I wonder if mOeeOm is running Cool N' Quiet. I run CNQ, don't overclock, and my FX-57 is currently idling at 34C, after several hours of Halo. I run an XP90/Panaflo L1BX. For the record, myX800 XT PE idles at 40-42C after such sessions - its' idling at 43C right now. Load temps can go above 63C.

CNQ makes a *big* difference in idle temps, since it drastically lowers both clockspeed and voltage of the CPU.

Also, it's not terribly useful to compare numbers between systems; even if ambient temps are the same, the temperature sensors in most parts generally aren't *that* accurate. They're basically there to make sure you're not running the CPU/GPU without a heatsink; they're not accurate enough for comparative benchmarking purposes.

I would expect X1800XTs to idle pretty hot, due to the high clockspeeds. I wouldn't think 50C is too high. I heard one of the things ATI is working on for future drivers is dynamically underclocking when the card is idle (kind of like NVIDIA does with its 2D/3D settings), to lower idle temperatures.

My X800 XL idles at ~50 C and my 6800U idled at around ~55 C. Your card looks fine to me.
