i have a 93 sentra, 4-speed automatic. i can feel the car shifting to 2nd gear around 20mph and to 3rd gear at 45mph. but even when i go 90mph, i can;t feel it shift to the 4th gear.

at what speed does it usually shift into 4th?

It's different for every car, but I can prettymuch guarantee that you won't hit 90 in 3rd gear.

And what if the car is a three speed?

whatever speed u r going as along as your rpm is around 2000-3500, you are fine

if u dont have a rpm reader.....listen to the engine...if its loud like ppl rumming up the engine then u might have a prob

but usually 4th gear is around 40-60 mph

RPM / Speed at shift depends on a lot of things, transmission, differential gears, computer stuff...It all depends on the car

Also, if you're slammin it down, you may not even feel the shift. My new tranny is a heavy duty/towing tranny, so it has higher than usual shift points, resulting in stiff shifts at a standard speed. But when I slam the gas, it shifts significantly higher so that the torque is at a higher spot. So when Im slamming the gas, my tranny shifts beautifully and I dont even feel it.

IMO - It should be mandatory to pass your road test w/a manual tranny car.

On my Gsr I usually shift at 3k RPM for convensional driving. so 4th gear would be about 40-45 mph

Why? What's your reasoning behind this statement?

Because the momentum of the car increases with speed, yet the engine torque remains constant, you will feel the outward signs of shifts less and less as speed increases, assuming they are taking place at the same approximate rpm range. The change in momentum that the engine can exert on the car is less as the total momentum of the car increases.

So, the 3 to 4 shift may be very subtle. In addition, the already considerable load on the torque converter(due to air drag) at this shift point tends to mask the 3 to 4 shift even more.

As was stated above the best way to see this shift is to watch the tach. If you don't have a tach you may not be able to locate the shift point. The torque converter really smoothes this shift out.

thats odd, you should notice, 90mph in 3rd gear should be at very high rpms, you engine would be screaming.

This is very apparent when driving standard.

My car can run as follows:
1st ~30
2nd ~65
3rd 90 (I think, i rarely get there and when i do it is usually in 4th already)
4th 109

well autos don't shift at set points all the time:p if you drive like a maniac and floor it then it'll stay in 3rd for quite a while going to high rpms. but then again if that happened in your case i doubt you wouldn't notice shifting. 4rth gear should ussually kick in at freeway speeds, its there to help fuel efficiency u know:p so why majestic mooses car hits rth at 109 i dunno.

Hmm like everyone says it varies with the car. Mine is a 5 speed manual and I usually use 4th gear for 30-40 mph. I don't know how fast my car can go in 3rd gear though. Redline isn't very high. I think 6500 or 7000 rpms.

Completely irrelevant to your thread, but I shift into 4th around 40MPH. Manuals are gooooooooood.

It depends on engine load too, if you have it floored, it won't shift to 4th at all possibly (if 4th is considered OD), if your barely on it, it may shift to 4th at 30 MPH. Its quite possible it isn't going to 4th.
