They weren't on my radar before the scandal. I mean, my family has a Volvo and it has been a real nightmare in terms of repair. What makes it bad is that since it is an imported car, repairs are expensive, and frequent. VW is in a similar category for me.
but at what price? If VW cars were in the same price range as a Ford Focus, I'd consider.
I was looking at a new GTI. They're nice, but it's ungodly expensive for what you get. My friends also did a reality check on me and mentioned all their pains with reliability with their VW's. So my potential $31k GTI Autobahn (210 hp FWD) turned into a $32k Mustang GT Premium (435 hp RWD). The Mustang has a much nicer interior, more than double the power, looks a ton better (subjective I know), and is a lot more fun!
Limiting yourself to manufactures that don't make stinky diesels isn't going to give you many options.
What big manufacture doesn't have a diesel vehicle?
if the price of a new golf r comes down to say $20k, I'd buy one. they actually have fairly nice interiors
Anywhere in the lineup, or in passenger cars?
I had a chance to drive the Ecoboost Mustang at the Ecoboost Challenge. I'm not sure if it was the press car, but the car had noticeable turbo lag (compared to my F30 335i at the time). The weight difference between the GT and the Ecoboost is noticeable, with the Ecoboost being easier to toss around, and the gas mileage should be better as well.I'm planning on an Ecoboost Mustang at some point. I was ridiculously impressed with the 4-banger...310HP @ 31MPG with Turbo, comfortable, surprisingly great visibility, and now with IRS, a pretty decent ride!

Sorry to go slightly OT.
Subaru, which is what a lot of former VW drivers I know currently drive, doesn't have a stinky diesel, at least not in the US.
It's not an issue of displacement...both cars use a single twin-scroll turbo. The 335i is rated for "300 hp", which is 10 less hp than the Ecoboost Mustang. It's just the response and lag from the Mustang. We were on a short course with tight turns. You'd put your foot down and just nothing. FWIW, the 328i with 2 L turbo (N26 engine) also has better response than the Ecoboost Mustang.2.3l vs 3l - that'll happen![]()
