serious responses appreciated

Well, I don't know if it's "okay" in this situation or just legally excusable, but certainly if someone is acting in a manner that gives you legitimate and justified reason to fear for your life, even if they are only saying words, then maybe.

As far as any violent response, there are plenty of things people can say that would (legally) be considered justification. I am not sure whether I really agree with the law or not on that, it's definitely still a debated topic.

Yes.

Depends on your patience and tolerance levels.

I guess if they said "I killed your entire family and had my way with their corpses." Other than that, probably not if you're a regular person in society. Or unless you're in prison and Bubba comes up and tells you to give him your cornbread. Then it's on.

Your prison had cornbread? That's swank.

by law? never.

but then i agree there just seems time it is needed. I do not care what names you call me. I have been called worse by better people. But if someone started calling my daughter names i think i might then do something.

If pushed far enough, most people (men) will snap.
How long it takes, depends on your patience, temper, and violent streak.
