At what point do you stop dealing with a dealer?

I've been looking to purchase a 2010 TL base for the past month or so. I've done the research about the car and options, and I have the color and trim down pat. I have been in negotiations for a couple weeks, in which I have emailed the four closest dealers, and used the ZAG.com pricing (31K) as the starting point.

The best I have gotten is about $300 off the zag pricing, or about $300 in accessories thrown in. Probing further (30 to 30.5k) just gets a "No, we can't do this, call us back if you reconsider" or "The price you are asking is ridiculous, I have to feed my kids, goodbye". Communications have been done both over email, and even in person for some dealerships.

When do I stop and cave to their pricing? Its not a matter of being able to afford the extra $500, its more not wanting to get ripped off by the dealer.

Any help would be appreciated.

$500 on a $31,000 car is not worth the hassle. The weeks of negotiations is a waste of your time over $500.

Go play with your kids., read a book, or rub your wifes back.

Your only other option is going outside the area you live in ad negotiating with bigger dealers who sell more volume to try and haggle down $500.

I have no kids, and no wife, but I suppose I could read a book or two. One of the dealers I'm dealing with happens to be in the top 5 in volume in the US. So the consensus so far is to cave?

The whole point of a dealer is to rip you off. It's called profit. If you don't want to get ripped off by a dealer, don't buy from the dealer.

Why would you spend that much for a FWD (or FWD until the front wheels slip?) car anyway?

Base TL's do not come with the SH AWD system.

He might as well buy an Accord or Camry. TL is the most vile abomination of auto styling that has ever been produced.

I don't particularly want an accord or camry. That and I kind of like the look.

Also, how exactly can I get a new car without going through a dealer?

you cant avoid the dealer...

best bet it look on ebay and find one. for a brand new car i would easily go out of state if the 4 local ones aren't playing ball. If its a matter of $500 i might cave it.

What is MSRP? In about 3 months 2011 should be out. They know that and so do we, and at 2 months i'll come back and tell them i do know that and knock off $1500 and see what they say. Since the new TL just came out the 2011 should be the same but no bragging rights saying i got a 2011 but same car just lower price.

edmunds.com normally has a feature that shows what people all around the world is paying for these cars. Some cars sell for more in certain areas and are in higher or lower demand.

Its like buying a g35 RWD in chicago, they will almost always cost less then finding a G35 AWD. Or the cost of vette in MIN VS FL/TX/CA

You want a car/trim/specs you want should be available thru every dealership and if its a common one most will have it on their lots. If the TL's still have a manual trans and thats the one you want, you might have a little trouble getting one at your price.

If you don't like the pricing locally get online and shop outside your area. I do it all the time. Sounds like your area dealers have a 'pact' on their pricing. Prices across the country vary widely and sometimes make no sense but occasionally you can save a bundle.

^ yep, remember it doesn't matter when you buy the car as you can take it to those local dealers to have it service, there is no loyally in this world. You dont get any better treatment if you buy local VS 5 states away.

It may also have something to do with supply/demand.

For instance when I purchased my 2007 Mazdaspeed 6, people were reporting great deals to be had on that vehicle because it didn't sell well. (I got dealer cost because at the time I worked for a "Ford Partner.") I spoke about this with my salesperson and he said that it was true. I got mine as soon as it showed up because I wanted black, but the silver MS6 that was on the lot was probably sitting there well over 3 months before they moved it. The salesperson also said that they were not offering a single penny off the 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 because of the high demand. In fact, they were all sold out when I went for test drives. They got a MS3 in on the truck that brought my MS6, and I think it sold within 2 days.

It was also like this BITD when I bought my last motorcycle. I was looking at dirt bikes and was interested in a Kawasaki KX250. Dealer would not budge from MSRP because they sold well. I ended up with a KDX200 at about 1/3 off MSRP because they couldn't move it.

There's something wrong with you if you think that car looks anything but repulsive. Even the Acura dealers/salesmen think it does.

I got ultra lucky with my RX8.

They took off $4.8k in exchange for making me pay a 4.9% APR, which I was initially mad at, but should work out since I am making double payments and should finish soon.

($24999 to $20200.)

The KBB value of my car is $28k...lol

If you want a new Acura, you're going to have to go through a dealer. It's not like you can drive up to the factory and pick one up.

That's a great price on that car. If it's more than you're willing to pay you may have to consider a different car (or used). According to truecar.com, the lowest price reported nationally is $31,233 so you're not getting ripped off at that price.

Buy a used car and cut the dealer out. No sense in paying the middle man, $500 or not.

Get a TSX V6 instead... it looks worlds better as a car.

Takes all the springiness out of the TSX's step and turns it into a snowplow which ends up being almost as expensive as a much larger and better equipped TL.

TSX V6 is fail.

dealers are catching up with internet pricing. Some will not give you the best price off the internet. Why? Because some people are not serious about buying. They get a cheap price just to see what price they get. Also, if they are not serious, they tend to blab about tell everyone the cheap price they could get and now the dealers are at a race to the bottom, which is not what they want to do. If you want the best price now, you better do the work (ie go to the dealer). For something like an Acura, you have to do it.

$500 over invoice I generally consider a reasonable and fair price. The only time you'd want to haggle there is if a car has been on the lot for a long time.

Costco and AAA (and others I'm sure) have programs where you pay true dealer invoice (not the price the dealer tells you he paid) plus dealer installed options, minus incentives plus a set dollar amount or percentage. The formula is pretty simple and often will save you $500 without the hours of haggling. I believe AAA will shop for a used vehicle as well and do the negotiations for you so you don't have to waste time doing it yourself.
