How far do you think SSDs will need to advance before they're mainstream enough to be included in OEM computers like Dell? And when do you think that will happen?
There's two questions, really. First is to be included in a Dell XPS/Alienware gaming machine. Second is to be included in the high-end configuration of a vanilla desktop like an Inspiron. (I'm not really asking when you think SSDs will obsolete HDDs entirely and HDDs stop being offered.)
Seems to me there's a number of obstacles:
- the $/GB has to drop quite a bit and total capacity has to increase, so you don't need an SSD plus a regular HDD
- they have to be well known to be reliable, so people don't hear SSD and immediately ask, "is that the one that stutters?"
- there need to be more brands that more or less all perform decently. So you can have cheap OEM ssds. Normally the hard drive isn't mentioned by brand name when advertising a Dell Inspiron. So fast reliable SSDs need to become commodity items like hard drives. Unless people's perception of hard drive changes and Dell will market it as coming with an Intel SSD, just like right now Dell will tell you you're getting a 9500GT Nvidia graphics card.
- maybe universal support for the TRIM command by SSDs and OS is necessary?
What do you all think?
