My friend is only 17 and like every teenager he wants a sports car. I told him he doesn't have enought exp. to drive a fast car. So what age would you reccommend my friend to be before he thinks of getting a sports car?

Age isn't much of a determining factor
Then why do people b1tch about they're too young to drive a fast car?

Maturity is more of a factor than age. You can be 25 but if you still have the mindset of a wreckless senior in high school who street races all the time, then you shouldn't have a fast car. I myself grew out of the wreckless speeding phase about a year and a half ago after getting a warning by a cop - that really opened my eyes up.

I was driving drag cars for my grandfather at 15 and owned my own raced car at sixteen. So I would say it would be based on experience more than age.

it's just maturity, not age
i think i could own a really fast car, but i just can't afford insurance so i don't 🙂

i make due with what i have.. my car will run in the 15's in the 1/4 mile. will have to do for now 😛

I guess its a maturity thing. Is he likely to abuse the car and put him or anyone else in danger? If so, then its a bad idea.

Let me tell you, though, that after driving a '68 Camaro with a custom built aluminum block (500hp), I would say that regardless of your age, you will respect the power. If you don't, you aren't old enough to drive it.

I say when you're 21
Let's see... as reserved a personality as I have... I didn't get over my teenage "angst" until I was about 22 or so... right after my first 2 accidents caused by my own aggressiveness. I can back down from 25... but 21 is still borderline to me.

Age has nothing to do with it, there was a 13 year old that won a full bodied race. I'm pretty sure he could handle it as well as, if not better than, 95% of the population. Including the 70 year old guys that can't see without thick glasses or soccer moms who MUST be on the phone at all times.

Edit: I don't remember this guy's name. But he had been racing various forms of motorsports since he was 4, and at the time I saw the article he was 23 and working his way through the racing ranks. 19 years of seat time is a pretty good amount of seat time.

Age isn't the factor. Maturity isn't the factor.

It's just any time AFTER they have had their first real big scare in a car. After they finally realize that they are not immortal and that their stupidity/lack of skill/over-confidence could get them or someone else killed.

It's only after that realization has occurred in full that it's okay for someone to own a fast car.

a 17 year old definately shouldnt get a sports car. i would have loved it when i was young but then again i might not be alive today if i had gotten it. im 22 now and i think im mature enough to drive one semi responsibly.

im not old enough to make a call about how old one shoudl be when getting a sports car. at every stage in life ill think im old enough for one, only to realize in the next stage that i wasnt.

I had a sports car when I was 18, and honestly never drove like an idiot. We do have a drag strip near where I live, so I have been able to get it out, and see what it can do.
