i walked past an old man in a crosswalk today, and he had the familiar strong and musty scent that only old people possess.

at what age does one acquire this powerful aroma?

Depends probably on how many foods with preservatives that you've eaten all of your life. Sort of an internal embalming fluid, provided via food.

I think the smell comes from less vigilant personal hygiene. For example, no matter how old or young you are, if you wear something for 3 days straight, it's going to have an odor. You can use an anti-antiperspirant religiously and your clothes are still going to smell.

This problem is compounded by the fact that older people tend to have an impaired sense of smell. So while the average person would notice that 3-day odor, a 70 year old might not. So from their point of view they smell fine.

whew, at least i have a few years left

No, he's lying to you and himself. Thats what old people say to make themselves feel better about their age. It's all downhill after 29.

For example, no matter how old or young you are, if you wear something for 3 days straight, it's going to have an odor.

So what you're saying is that I need to change out my skin every few days?

Old-person smell" is for real, according to a new study into body odour. And what's more, it's not as bad as the smell of younger people. Researchers at the Monell Chemical Senses Centre in the USA tested people's perceptions of the body odour emitted by people aged 20 to 30, 45 to 55, and 77 to 95. Volunteers in each age group wore a T-shirt containing underarm pads to bed for five nights. Samples from the pads were then tested on 41 "sniffers," who had the task of evaluating each armpit smell. The evaluators were able to distinguish between the different age groups and said the smell from the older age group was less intense and less unpleasant than the others.
The study is part of wider research into how our brain interprets different human smells and how we react to them. Lead researcher Dr Johan Lundstrom said: "Similar to other animals, humans can extract signals from body odours that allow us to identify biological age, avoid sick individuals, pick a suitable partner, and distinguish kin from non-kin." He said of his test results: "Elderly people have a discernible underarm odour that younger people consider to be fairly neutral and not very unpleasant. This was surprising given the popular conception of old age odour as disagreeable." He said other bodily smells other than B.O. might also differ with age, especially that of our breath.

Some old people start to smell because they stop bathing regularly. When you're working, you get up in the morning, take a shower, and get dressed. In retirement, there's no routine, so it's not uncommon for them to wear the same clothes, forget to change underwear, or even go days/a week without showering.

It happens.

My first job was at a catering company, and the father gave the business to the son when he got old to take over. The dad was like 80, and lived in an apartment above the business. He would frequently come downstairs to the kitchen and smell like a homeless person, and his son would have to say "Dad, go clean yourself up!" Like I said...it happens.

Might be mid-40s. If you're jaded to the point where you think brushing your teeth doesn't matter, or basic hygeine in general isn't mandatory. Or if you have contracted some STD or leaky bowel. Once I worked with an overweight woman who smelled like poop sometimes.

Who was the atot member that said it wasn't necessary to wash his clothes until he had 3 days in them? Worked in an office and said he didn't sweat so it was O.K.

@zinfamous you remember everything.
