At the end of Saving Private Ryan, what are Captain John's final words?

I couldn't make it out.

meltdown75 is just confused. The correct quote is "Earn it."

Do I really deserve the rollie eyes? Please explain. I answered his question. I realized that the quote you gave sounded like it was from the very end, and I stated that I thought you were confused on which quote he was talking about. So, WTF? Cram those rollie eyes up your ass.

:)

Hoppum pisses me off in that movie. He lets several of his fellow soldiers die, then when the tides turn he finally decides to make a move on the German soldiers.

Yea, Hoppum acted too little too late. He had too much faith in his fellow man, and had to find out the hard way that people aren't all good.

Does the word confused offend you or something?

con·fuse (kn-fyz)
v. con·fused, con·fus·ing, con·fus·es
v. tr.
1. To mistake (for another)

Hence you mistaked which part of the end of the movie he was talking about.

i'm so done with this thread, it's not even funny

cheers

fyi: there is another scene in the movie where he is talking to his wife. because he carried that burden his whole life, he wanted to know if he had "earned it" and basically asked his wife to confirm his life's worth. (this is the scene i was reminded of - yes i know the scene the OP was talking about. that's the funny thing about movies that you know well - when you think of one scene you are sometimes reminded of a subsequent or prior scene).

that's the whole point of his character, not to mention he was just some scared reporter to start with
