AT&T Wireless in NYC

So I've lived in Central NJ and Ithaca, NY recently, and have had no problems with my AT&T Wireless 3G service with my Nexus One. In fact, I recently clocked 3200+ KB/s on AT&T's 3G network. No dropped calls, nothing.

I moved to Manhatten on Friday, and now 75%+ of my calls are dropped at some point. Internet works only half the time, and slow as hell when it does.

Is it really this bad in the city for AT&T? No wonder why everyone complains - I always thought they were crazy for complaining, but now I get it. I can't even make a damn phone call.

I haven't had it that bad in AT&T in Manhattan, but I had their service a couple of years ago.

Verizon is king when it comes to NYC and the suburbs, though. Virtually no dropped calls for me. 3G speed is great on my Blackberry. I've used in pretty much all over uptown, midtown, and downtown Manhattan always with good connection (exception being subway stations, of course).

I've learned not to go with either AT&T or T-Mobile if I want the best service here. Though T-Mobile has done a lot to improve their reliability and signal strength around the city.

i don't have experience with at&t or verizon, but T-Mobile service has been great for me in NYC the past 10 months. 3g everywhere I go, and i consistently get ~2mbps down/1.5 up.

the only time it doesn't work so well is when i'm deep in a high rise. usually drops down to edge in that case.
