AT&T wants to upgrade my DSL internet connection...

It will now be called u-verse. I'm trying to get them to explain themselves, but am getting nowhere. A tech will come out and make some changes at the pole but AT&T will not explain to me what he will be doing. I also will get a new router. The monthly cost will be cheaper (at least for 12 months) and my connection will be faster.
Anybody know what exactly is going on at the pole? Does anybody have any experience with u-verse internet service? Thanks.
 
Traditional AT&T DSL is ATM-based and limited to 6mbps. It is ATM from the DSLAM at the CO to their nearest POP over OC3 and is hugely oversubscribed. UVerse is delivered two different ways: either as VDSL (if you have TV service through them) or as ADSL2+ (if you only have Internet access through them) and is IP-based from the DSLAM at the RT.

If they're doing the upgrade for free, let them. UVerse is a far superior service that scales much higher. Uverse is capable of speeds up to 22mbps downstream.

I've had both forms of UVerse and they've both been pretty good (though the VDSL version was better than the ADSL2+ version).

Is the ADSL2+ version reliable as my existing DSL?

That will vary by area.

Where I am, my ADSL2+ Uverse has been significantly more reliable than my old DSL. Back when I had the VDSL version (4 years ago), I never once had an outage...it was extremely fast and very reliable (again, much more so than the old DSL I had before I switched.)

Overall, my experiences with UVerse in two different forms in two different areas has been extremely positive.
 
DSL -> Uverse at my parents was basically "no effect" to "slightly more calls to ATT to 'adjust the line'." DSL has always sucked in that area since I lived with them 10 years ago.
