UPDATE 11/04/02: Deal gets even better. Received my phone today and just like the kit I bought last year there is an offer for an additional $25 refill card for filling out a postcard survey. Added to the $25 card included with the pack, that's $50 in free calling time over the first 90 days. Only negative is that I had to call Amazon and have them mail me both rebate forms -- the .JPG copies on their web site are almost unreadable.

Amazon is offering 2 rebates on the Nokia 5165 prepaid cell phone. Buy it for $99.99 (with free FedEx super saver shipping). Receive rebates of $70 ($50 + $20) for a net cost of $29.99. This is a kit that includes phone, charger, headset, and initial recharge card variously listed at $25 or 90 minutes on their web site. Either way, the net cost of the phone itself is $5 or less when you factor in the free minutes. Minutes purchased on AT&T prepaid plans expire within 45 days unless you buy a new refill card, in which case they roll over. You can buy additional minutes for as little as $10 a pop.
Notes: the $50 rebate is through Nokia; the $20 rebate through Amazon. Both say that you must sign up for 1 year of service minimum, but the coupons also list the AT&T Free2Go prepaid service as qualifying. Amazon has explicit links to those rebates from the page listing the phone's price. I ordered this same AT&T prepaid phone prepaid through Amazon a year ago and had no problems with the rebate from Nokia so I would trust them again. The $20 Amazon rebate expires November 18. So long as you order the phone by then, you qualify for it, even if it doesn't ship until later. The $50 rebate from Nokia is valid through January 31.
CORRECTION: The $50 rebate deadlines are 12/31/02 to purchase the phone, and 01/31/03 to activate service and mail in the coupon.
