AT&T/Cingular postpaid to prepaid

So my contract is up and I want to port my current postpaid (with Cingular) to a prepaid number (not necessarily Cingular, but probably will be ideally)...but I'm getting the runaround by sales at either RadioShack, Walmart or even the corp store. They said it can't be done because it's going from post- to pre- so local portability does not apply?

Has anyone done it before? I'm specifically looking for Cingular postpaid to Cingular prepaid.

Stay away from the secondary resellers. If you go to the actual AT&T/T-mo/Verizon store they should be able to hook you up.
