Ok, I am currently thinking of changing to AT&T and was wondering if for some reason in the future I want to change my plan, will I be required to sign another two years with them?

Nope, you should be able to change your rate plan at any time. I was able to.

Yes, you can change your plan anytime but your contract is then extended two years from that date automatically.

It's a legal Hotel California that should not be legal.

So it DOES extend the contract?

Normally, if you accept new promos.

If you are increasing your plan you don't have to extend.

If you are reducing your plan you will have to extend.

Is this how it is with most providers?

This is the case with tmobile as well. If you change your plan downward they extend your contract. If you increase your plan but to a "special" they also extend your contract. I dunno if this occurs if you upgrade to a normal plan.

I've been told the same going either way.

When I upgraded my t-mobile plan my contract was extended another year from the date of the upgrade which I was totally unaware until I was ready to switch carrier. I would imagine AT&T would do the same.

With AT&T (4 years ago) and Verizon and had similar experiences with both.

I don't have any issue adding minutes to my plan. But changing my plan service required me to extended (which is why I never did it). I don't know why changing my plan 8 months into a 1yr contract requires a TWOyr extension, but that's what they said.

I upgraded my "Cingular" plan about a month ago and my contract was not extended. It had already expired at the time of upgrade, but I doubt that makes any difference.

I've been with Cingualr for about 6-7 years and have never had my contract extended when I switched plans. The only time I've had it extended was when I got a new phone.

we have changed our plans few times (went to lower min and higher min) over the last 7-8 years and never had the contract extended. However, the last time, the CSR did say that the contract would be extended but I told her that it was never extended before and if they were going to extend the contract, they should give me new phones on all my family lines first. She went on hold for 2 min and then came back and told me that the contract will not be extended.

I will be changing my plan again sometime this week or next week (switching to lower min plan as we got ~4k rollover min), so will update on how it goes.

When you downgrade you're allowed to keep only the same amount of rollover minutes as the lower monthly plan has. So if you go down to a 1,000 minutes a month plan you'll only have 1,000 minutes left in rollover.

Nope. You dont loose even a single rollever minute. Its not like we accumulated those 4k rollever min in a single month. They got accumulated over the past 9-12 months. Unless Cingular/AT&T changed something recently (if they did, then they will just loose a long time customer when our contract expires)

We use ~1600-1700 min per month (combined on our family plan). So we upgrade to 2100 min plan and when we have ~3-4k rollover min in our account, we go back to 1400 min plan and use those rollover. After we are down to ~500 rollever min left, we go back to 2100 min plan. Have been doing this since rollover started.

I just switched to AT&T recently, and I was told that you do lose rollover minutes if you change plans. However, you're sticking with the family talk plan, and you're just changing a parameter - the number of minutes on your plan - so you aren't actually changing plans. ...Or at least that's how the rep explained it to me when I started a Family Talk plan.

Oh, and as for contracts being extended... going only by my extensive reading of peoples experiences with AT&T/Cingular, your plan is generally extended only if you are more than half way through your current contract.

When I increased my plan I did not have to extend.
When I changed to a similar plan and accepted promos (a razr), I had to extend.

My phone was about 4 years old and I wanted something cheap with bluetooth, the razr has worked well for me, so I'm not too upset about signing for another 2 years ... especially since now I get rollover minutes and also nights starting at 7pm ... w00t ....
