ATTBI uses your mac addie to ID you on the network, you just got a new Dell system ? are you using a new nic ? if so you'll either need to get the mac addie from the new nic and call ATTBI and get them to
provision the addie or you'll need to pull the nic from the Dell and install your old nic.

1. It is a new nic but this has been down since yesterday when I was using my old PC. Even if I dont connect it to the computer the modem doesnt get a signal from the cable line. btw I also tried USB.

2. Not using a Router, Just a str8 connection from the Motorola SB4100 to the PC.

Thanks for the responses.

Baff has the answer. If ATT is controlled by MAC addresses as Insight BB is, it wont let your new NIC in your new Dell connect.

[edit] Well, looks like you're screwed then.

if you aren't getting the green light that's labled "cable" the issue lies either with the modem itself or with Attbi.

hmm. but if im reading his post correctly, he said his connection died yesterday, and received his dell today..

instead of going thru the hassle of calling tech support, swap the nics and see if that will work..

my connection is just fine on attbi :p

did the tech person have you do a hard reboot on the modem? I always call and talk to 3 or 4 techs when I have had troubles as here they can't have anyone to your house for a week.

With in a few hours dumb thing works on itself. Their sevice is so screwy.

Just keep trying the modem rebooting thing. It usually works for me most I have had to do it is 3 times before it works.

I think I'd first try hooking up the old pc again,if he's still not getting signal from the cable end of things, I'd suspect it an issue on Attbi's side of the street or the modem itself, why break warranty on a brand new rig if he doesn't have to,besides getting them to provision a new mac addie only takes about 5 minutes.

if you aren't getting cable signal on your modem and your next door neighbor's connection is also dead
I'd say it's a network problem on Attbi's end of things.

Btw,your neighbor also needs to call Attbi and report that his connection is down, they sometimes need
a bit of a kick in the rump before they believe there's a problem with them and not on the customer's end of things.

if you're not scared to mess with tcp/ip settings,

change your ip address to 192.168.100.10
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

then goto http://192.168.100.1

that should show a complte diagnostic readout and any errors it's encountering.

start --> settings --> network and dialup connections --> local area connection --> properties

scroll down to internet protocol TCP/IP and then click Properties

Click use the following IP address: 192.168.100.10
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

leave everything else as is.. click ok. (reboot may be necessary depending on os (2k/xp dont require this))

open web browser and goto http://192.168.100.1

after your done, follow the same steps and change it back to "obtain ip address automatically" and press ok.

i have at&t also which was previously mediaone. it sounds like it is at&t's prob right now but u probably are going to have to call them and tell them your new mac address to get the connection to work. i had to do this when i set up my comp and router.

Plug your machine into the modem via ethernet and have everything set to automatically assigned or dhcp. When you do open up IE and go to http://192.168.100.1 and read the log file

If the modem is unable to get an external address it will assign one to you, thats way you don't have to reconfigure anything
