At my wits end & I thinking I've been had by a Antec 450W PSU

The Build:

Antec Sonata II w/ 450w PSU
Asus P5N SLI replaced x2 - now Gigabyte 965PDS3 dead
Intel E6300
Corsair XMS 2GB 5300
eVGA 7600gt
WD Raptor 150GB
and nothing but problems

The Story thus far:

  • 450w PSU came DOA (no power), used 400w Antec PSU while awaiting replacement.
  • System worked fine for 1 month while awaiting replacement - subpar service from Antec, IMHO.
  • Replacement came in, 450w replacement powered on system but no POST. Same with 400w PSU. Asus P5NSLI sent for RMA
  • Replacment MB (same problem) power only, no POST, no beeps, nothing but spinning fans. Troubleshot with the Asus guys, MB declared dead.
  • MB replaced with Gigabyte 965PDS3. Gigabyte board POST with 400w PSU. 450w PSU kills MB & now MB will not POST with either PSU.

WTF?
So I do a little research & find the reviews for this PSU. Needless to say they're pathetic.

So I guess I'll call Antec & Newegg AGAIN.

I believe an class action lawsuit is in order. This is ridiculous.:frown:

There are much better for cheaper out there that don't use the absolute worst capacitors on the planet to save $5 in their builds, which Antec has done for themselves in their SmartPower builds. They have been using Seasonic for some of their other power supplies, such as the Earthwatts and Trios, but I don't think rewarding Antec for building such crap as the SP power supplies by buying another of theirs is something I'd do.

For real cheap, I'd look at the Enhance line, like the ENP-5140GH or the ENP-5150GH. The 5140GH got a superlative review at JonnyGuru.com .... almost zero ripple at its full rated output (400W).

The 5150GH is a 500W unit of the same design. Both are rather plain looking....no cable sleeving, no modular cables......but you are going to get pure, clean, stable power from them.

Another good aspect of them is their pricing....the 5140GH is $57 and the 5150GH is $69. Both are found at eWiz.com.

BTW....Enhance is the OEM supplier for some of Silverstone's power supplies (like the Strider line), so if Silverstone can trust them, I think you could, too. :)

A step up is another great power supply.....the Corsair HX520W. For around $25 or so more than the Enhances (Buy.com seems to have the best prices recently on it), you get a rebranded Seasonic with a 5 year warranty, modular cables which are all sleeved, and again, nice stable and clean power.

Or this one not a brand name at all, but it has alot of good reviews.

I wouldn't get the Thermaltake 430 one. It has really weak 12 V current rating.

My Antec NeoHE 550 is working fine in my moderately demanding system (link in sig).
