I welcome this move. Anandtech is one of the only "pro" forums I am on not running vBulletin. Can't wait.

I am having a hard time imagining how custom avatars could possibly hurt. If someone finds that tiny block of image offensive, maybe we should do away with sigs and dangerously NSFW threads altogether. Just disallow animated gifs and things can only improve from fusetalk bs.

Images, I couldn't care less. Links work fine for me, embedded would be marginally more convinient though.

Wow. I remember how pro-Cold Fusion the developers used to be here. vBulletin is cool, but I'll miss this place as it is right now.

people wont use it
Make it a bannable offense to post spoilers outside of spoiler tag. Bam, done.

.

Yea well, I enjoy trolling and posting goatse, so I guess we should just throw better judgment to the wind for the sake of someone's enjoyment pissing others off, eh?

1. Send out an email before hand if you can, that will test how many people have actually updated their account. You could put a news post saying everyone should expect an email and those that don't receive one need to re-verify their profile or contact a mod. That way you hammer out problems before having password issues.

2. Put the new site up in parallel and in beta form. That way you can get passwords cleaned out before migrating all the real data. Just let people know that any posts in the new beta forum won't be saved. This will also allow you to have major testing of the site to hammer out any bugs before you switch over all the data.

One of the things I used to do was handle the email. This is a good idea because there will be hundreds (if not thousands) of emails asking for a password. The only downside is all the bounced emails that will have to be sorted out.

I like #2 also.

Well, since we got a News item about this and the thread was bumped, I guess its appropriate to reply.

For myself: I dont like it. Every VB forum I have seen looks like a mangy dogs butt. And even if Anandtech somehow makes it look pretty I am afraid it still wont be useful.

Am a member of another forum that uses VB and navigating around is a real pain in the ass. I hate it. Thats why I only have about 100 posts in 5 years over there.
Of course, for all the folks here who dont wish to see me any more, the transition will be a good thing.
But I will sure miss me, :(.

Anyway, I dont need pretty in a website but I do need functionality. Even with its current issues Fusetalk is a heck of a lot easier to use than VB.

/ Speech.

So, is anyone else looking forward to cleaning house on all the lazy buttheads who wont update their emails?

I don't find vb any harder to use than fusetalk. They are hardly a difficult thing to use.

i find vB hard to navigate as well -- we are going to try and include a left side (hideable) menu containing a full forum listing (like we have here) so that people can skip easily between forums.

we will be enabling inline images as well, but we have not decided on custom avatars yet. for images we will attempt to allow users to select whether or not they want inline images displayed as a link or as an inline image.

we are also looking at allowing people to enable a language filter on their own accounts if they wish. this should make it so that people can express themselves freely but those who don't want to deal with it can avoid it.

beyond that we'll do the best we can with the look and feel.

Wow, listen to some of you! Many of you make it sound like its a big house we all live in, and are finnaly upgrading to one where each can have their own rooms!

Some want to keep living 2 per room, others want their privacy. Some want to be able to finnaly hang posters on their walls and piss on the floor if needed, of course others don't.! Wow, I'm baked!

Thanks for working on the look and feel. It seems when I visit other forums whenever I say to myself "This forum sucks" I look closer and say "ohh... vBulletin, no wonder".

I'm with you. I'm going to miss the look/feel of fusetalk.

I can understand admins/mods having problems with the backend of FT but don't understand what all regular users complain about? I have no problems with it and I have been around for more than 5 years

Just edit the image tags from configuration and force spoiler tags around them so people will have to click on the spoiler button to see an image.

What's wrong with giving each user the option to disable images?

Any updates on this? I imagine it's a huge undertaking, but I wasn't sure if it was still moving forward or if it is no longer being done.

It is still being worked on. Remember, we are the moderators not the developers. :)
