Most cores sit idle in today's consumer desktop.

Even more iGPU cores sit idle.

But the point is that if you sometimes have to wait for your task to finish because you have too few CPU cores, it doesn't matter that the CPU cores sit idle a lot of the time. You might still need more cores from time to time.
