Personally, I wish we didn't need to go this route. Obviously, if a person is taking a test, they have some reason to worry. In addition, what happens when a person gets a positive result without a counselor or support there?
I know that here you can get an anonymous test for free (takes about 20 minutes to get the results back). While you're waiting, you have a session with an HIV prevention counselor to discuss if you have any particular risky behaviors. Knowledge is shared and ideas given about how to protect yourself. Then, if the results have come back negative, the counselor will share that with you. If they come back positive you are informed by a counselor specifically trained for that purpose. It tends to make the news more manageable and gives hope (HIV is no longer a death sentence, but a managable condition).
Should HIV testing be readily available? Absolutely! But, I wish more people would utilize settings as described above instead of doing it themselves. However, this is a great idea for those--who for whatever reason--would not utilize the above service.
