Yay? Nay?

I was just thinking that a lot of the situations where I find myself able to give the most helpful advice (I would say mostly troubleshooting electrical and engine performance stuff), I tend to kind of repeat myself a lot. I'm sure others have noticed they have to do the same.

While I have no issue helping anyone that wants to listen, it just seems like we could compile a lot of common problems and general questions into a 'FAQ thread' and sticky it. I would be happy to start it (and possibly maintain and update it), and others could add to it with knowledge from different areas.

Obviously I don't want to try and run off all the 'help me with my car' posts...they give me something to do. 😀

But it just seems like it would be helpful to have a semi-comprehensive list of common stuff to get people started- especially when ATers from tech or OT with little automotive experience come in to ask for help.

You could just break it down into general categories and expand from there. Something like:

My car will not start: briefly explain different types of no-starts, define terms. Then have subcategories like 'cranks but doesn't start,' 'does not crank or start' (I know the latter bit is implied...'no crank no start' is just such an industry standard term), 'engine eventually starts but has long crank time'...ect.

My 'check engine' light is on: briefly explain function of CEL/MIL and general OBD stuff. Then you break it down into very common stuff like evap leaks, misfires, ect.

Anyhow, I'm sure you guys get the gist of what I'm saying without much need for explanation. Thoughts?

i could see a need if it was a specific car forum. but it being a general garage forum i think the each thread system works best

Sure don't think it would hurt anything. Most of the problems I see on here are not "vehicle specific". Might be a nice quick reference....
