Asymmetrical Multiplayer FPS games

I'm looking to get back into FPS gaming, something a bit more competitive and fast paced like the old UT style maybe. However I don't really like straight up TDM, CTF and DM anymore, they're just too boring.

I'm looking for something with a bit of asymmetry, where the teams have different goals or play differently, I used to love Assault for UT where one team attacks and one defends, it felt more like coop but instead of against bots it was against real people.

Is there any good FPS games these days which have assault-like game modes, or anything a bit non-conventional, anything that's not the same old bland tactical shooter would be nice, I'm not looking for another slow paced CS type game.

Natural Selection 2 has asymmetrical sides, aliens vs marines, so they play very differently. Inexpensive game.

Some Battlefield 3 game modes are attack/defend scenarios (called "Rush"). And there's co-op missions, but they are pretty bad. BF4 is out fairly soon though, and the Humble Bundle to get it cheap ended a short while ago.

Team Fortress 2 also has attack/defend modes and is free.

I'm fairly burned out on TF2 and LFD1/2, and I'm not installing origin for BF3.

I might give NS2 a go though, always liked the look of that, thanks. Anything else, more fast paced?

Yeah another game I'm burned out on, it's good fun but it's also a little slow. I'm kinda wanting something faster, something with a bit more twitch shooting in it.

The combat in NS2 moves very fast, I'd say it definitely has some twitch shooting in it. 🙂

Just had a thought, does Wolfenstein Enemy Territory still have an active community, the assault game mode on that was bad ass. Was the Quake Wars follow up game actually any good?
