I recently purchased an Asylum GeforceFX 5950 Ultra video card...and i was just wondering if the hardware is directx9?

Because when i goto the video options in half-life 2 and counter-strike source.. its says that the hardware is 8.1.. anyone have any idea how to fix this? I'm pretty sure that the video card has to be a directX 9 card or else why would they be comparing it to the radeon 9800pro?????

This is my first Geforce card and already not having a good experience.

Excuse my dumb question, but you do have DirectX 9 installed software-wise, right? Start > Run > dxdiag to confirm that. Or if you have WinXP SP2, it includes DX 9.0C.

If you need DirectX 9.0C then you probably should consider just installing Service Pack 2, and also gain siginficant security enhancements at the same time, but you can get DX9.0C from here if you want to start with that.

Your 5950 does support hardware directX 9.......however.....Half-Life2 does NOT support the FX series of video cards in that mode, only 8.1 hardware mode.

I found that out with my FX5900XT card which is what made me upgrade sooner than i wanted to my current 6800 card.

Other games like Doom3 will run in DirectX 9 hardware mode but sadly HL2 will not.
There is some hack to force it, but then it runs so slow it wouldn't be worth it.
