Hi,

If anyone has one of the new Asus Z77 boards, I'm wondering if they could answer a couple questions about the included Fan Xpert 2 software:

1) Can you control the speed of 3-pin fans via voltage control? Or only 4-pin PWM fans?

2) Are each of the fan headers controllable individually?

I'm looking at the P8Z77-V Pro specifically.

Thanks

Tis is taken from the ASUS user support forum, P8Z77-V section

Q: I am thinking of getting a z77-v mobo, which includes 3 chassis fans and 2 cpu fans sockets ( all of them are 4 pin connectors). I already did a lot of homework and knew that I can plug a 3 pin regular case fan into a 4 pin chassis fan socket and still be able to control it using fan xpert 2 (correct me if i am wrong). My questions is if I plug a 3 pin regular case fan into one of the cpu fan sockets, can I still control it using fan xpert software, or the case fan will just run at full speed? The missing wire is pwm control wire.
A: The BIOS does not appear to have a fan select feature for the CPU fan header... and so only a PWM 4wire fan can be controlled through Q-Fan and the FanXpert feature... A three wire DC fan will indeed run full tilt all the time.

Thanks for the info Alex. Apparently the boards below the Pro/Deluxe/Sabertooth level only have Fan Xpert+ and not Fan Xpert 2, so the config might be slightly different. A user over at overclock.net says his Sabertooth Z77 can control 3-wire fans via voltage:

My Sabertooth Z77 is controlling all 4 3-pin fans with the CHA_FANx headers. It uses voltage control.

I'll try to get an answer on Asus' forums. It's annoying how hard it is to figure this stuff out. I'd look up the Pro manual but only the French and Chinese versions seem to be available on Asus' website.

Gramboh, I have just watched PCPer video reviews on Asus Z77 features. Even a P8Z77-V (Non-pro) have Fan Xpert 2 feature. Yes, even a 3-pin fan header can control the speed of 3-pin fans. You could also set each of the fan speed individually. Hope this enlighten you mate on your concern. cheers!

This video could help you to learn more about Asus Z77 Motherboards offerings and features. Worth watching mate!

I found a workaround with the P8Z77-V Pro with a zalman 9700 cooler which only has a 3 pin connection. The CPU and CPU_OPT connections only are adjustable with 4 pin connections and run max speed otherwise. You can plug the cpu cooler into any other CHASSIS_FAN connections and adjust manually in bios or fan xpert.

Tho you might have figured it out from responses.

1) The CPU and OPT_CPU (or whatever its called) only work with PWM. The others can work with either voltage control or PWM (3 or 4 pin).

2) You can control them individually. I honestly was in bios 5 minutes ago and already forgot .. CPU and OPT_CPU may not be seperate settings.. the others are.

You just have to enable QFan (mine was on by default) and then you have drop down options for each.
