Asus Z170 P - PCI memory controller

I have an ASUS Z170P LGA 1151 motherboard. There is a device called a PCI memory controller that seems to be part of it. What does it do? Please note I do not want information about drivers/updates for this item - I want to know what a PCI memory controller does in general and what it might do in this system specifically - so I want to know what hardware it represents and what that hardware does. I have googled quite a bit and got all kinds of hits about how some people have issues with it in Device Manager where it shows up with a yellow exclamation point but that is not my interest. None of the answers actually deal with what it does. So please let me know what a PCI memory controller does. Again,I don't want any information about the drivers for it/updating them, etc. I want to know the function of the PCI memory controller.

Thanks in advance.
