Anyone here endorse this card? I have a creative x-fi xtremegamer that stopped working correctly and I would like to replace it. I have a feeling that the xonar dx is good but not as good for gaming. Is this right? I suppose it would be better for gaming that on-board. Anyone here use this card? Thank you.

I upgraded from an audigy 2 zs to a xonar DX, I think it's great. The sound quality is so much better I feel like I had earplugs on for the past few years. From reviews I've read, most people feel that it has much better sound quality than any flavor x-fi, even the 'extreme music' or whatever it's called. While its DACs are different than the D2X and D2 xonar models, most reviews said the difference in sound quality between the different xonars is negligible if it even exists. Something to note is it has front panel pinouts - I'm pretty sure the D2 and D2X don't have these. It requires a floppy-style power connector, and the power provided at the headphone outs is pretty solid, it's capable of driving low impedence phones better than most cards. Its drivers work great and the software is crisp and clean, not an endless bloated bog the way Creative's always are. It was a refreshing change.

On the downside, as a budget model, it has skimped in a few areas. Namely cabling - it comes only with a molex <-> floppy cable and an optical cable. Also, it only has five jacks; front, side, rear, center/sub and input. One input. Worse, this "input" doubles as the optical out - so no mic for ventrilo if you're outputting optical to a receiver.

As for games, to tell the truth I haven't been playing much since I got it, I've been listening to music mostly since it sounds so much better. I also don't have Vista, which as I understand it has some kind of positional sound standardization feature. So that's an area to read up about.

Would a Xonar DX be better than HD Azalia onboard sound? I get some crackling with onboard sound.

It will kill onboard sound. The only thing in question is how well it does positional audio for games.

Plus, my pci-e 1x slot is right below my cpu and not far from my ram slots. Hopefully it's not a very large card.

Another question, would I be better served with a xonar dx or by using motherboard hd sound and buying a good amp/dac since I am only using headphones usually? Thanks.

That's something to ask at head-fi, there's some debate as to whether onboard digital out is perfect or colored.

As for the DX card itself, it's long but only half as high as regular cards. And I believe it comes in a PCI flavor as well as PCI-E.

Thanks for your help so far CKent. I am getting ready to pull the trigger on a sound card, one of these three:

Auzentech X-Fi Prelude. How are the drivers for these? People at Newegg seem to think they are beta at best.

Asus Xonar DX. My least favorite but the cheapest.

HT Omega Claro +. Looks like it is on even ground with the Auzentech.

Any pushes in the right direction for me, seeing that I use my sound for as much gaming as I do music, would be excellent. If I don't get enough, no big deal, but the insight would help for sure. Thanks again.
