Hi All, I have an Intel ASUS T2-P barebone system and have upgraded it to XP Pro SP2. Now the sound will not function. By this I mean that the SoundMax drivers on the accompanying CD do install ok, but when the PC boots up again all the sound hardware options are "greyed out". I've tried 3rd party drivers and even Intel generic ones, but nothing seems to work. Please help.......

Try uninstalling the drivers - all trace of them.
Restart - Disable audio in BIOS - see if you get error messages when you reboot to check if the sound was uninstalled properly.
Re enable audio in BIOS
Reload chipset drivers (updated).
Reload audio drivers.

Thanks montag451, Tried that. I am considering a repair / reinstall to really refresh things after uninstalling again. What do you think? I haven't seen crap like this since WIN98! I forget to mention that in the BIOS it is set to AUTO with the only other choice being DISABLE. Thanks again.....

Could you try a soundcard?
There are advantages - less cpu cycles hogged/less interference etc.
Can get a real cheapie as well.
