Alright so it's that time of year and I'm getting ready to buy myself a christmas gift. A new 1440p monitor. This is something I've thought about for a while but it is only now that I'm determined. I already know about the korean monitors but I'm pretty convinced I want to aim for something a little better, if that's possible.

I have my sights set on one of the 3 below but open for suggestions

The ASUS http://www.walmart.com/ip/Asus-PB278Q/22025680

The BENQ http://www.walmart.com/ip/BenQ-Ameri...710PT/30824056

The VIEWSONIC http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...creen_LED.html

The links are just to show the monitors I'm interested in so I'm still open for options on where to buy it from. I'm looking for a good return policy for the sake of dead pixels, backlight bleed, etc. Regarding budget I'd like to keep it around 800ish.

For 800$ you can do so much better than any of those. Given the choices, i'd say viewsonic. Not benq, not asus.

I will say this. The best 1440p panel i've ever seen, hands down, by a MILE was the Samsung S27B970. It is absolutely gorgeous and (IMO) heads and shoulders above the rest. But it is very costly being that it has full adobe RGB coverage. If you can find it around the 800$ mark, which you probably can since it has been out for some time - i'd go for that. Otherwise, the viewsonic model is the best one that you list.

BenQ makes good gaming monitors for 144hz, but their 1440p panels have an unproven track record and questionable QA. Asus...well.....let's hope you get a good panel, because if you have to RMA prepare for some annoyances. I love asus motherboards and GPUs but monitors? They make good gaming monitors, but I've haven't heard of glowing reviews for their 1440p screens. I don't know. The viewsonic model has received tons of great reviews and their CS in the states is pretty good as well in case you need to RMA down the road.

If you can find the samsung, i'd opt for that. Keep in mind that it is a glossy panel, so it may not be ideal for brightly lit environments. Otherwise if Samsung is not an option, the viewsonic is the best out of the ones in your short list.

Thanks for your response,

At a quick glance, the Samsung S27B970 is still sitting at a grand, unless going with a refurb/used which i'm not willing do. As far as RMA'ing any of them I want to avoid unless it's out of my return period at the place of purchase. So within in a 15 to 30 day window if I don't find any defects I think I'd feel pretty safe.

The Viewsonic is looking like a strong contender. Do you have any other suggestions outside of the 3 I listed?(and the Samsung)

Other suggestions? The Dell 2713H (not the HM) is a great panel with full adobe RGB coverage. The H is better quality than the HM, and the HM does have issues with "cross hatching" which doesn't occur on the H model. It should fit your budget as well. Do note that Dell has unsurpassed CS IMO. There has never been an instance where Dell has not taken care of me as a customer, they really are A++ fantastic in terms of CS and RMAs.

I really do like that viewsonic panel. It is a PLS panel and is very good in terms of quality. For me it boils down to a long term type of purchase where the MFGR will take care of me in case there are problems down the road. IMO, you can't beat Dell or Viewsonic in that respect. Asus? While I love their PC hardware, I can't recommend asus monitors on that basis. That goes for BenQ as well - BenQ makes great 144hz panels, but i'd be leery dropping 800$ on a 1440p screen made by them.

I'd also note that both of these screens by Dell and viewsonic include "gaming" modes which really improves motion clarity while gaming. It isn't 144hz quality, but it is darn good.
