How do the major Windows laptop makers compare in quality?

I'm giving serious thought to parting out my desktop pc and moving to a gaming laptop.

Don't rely on others to give you the answers. Their answers will be totally anecdotal and may not help you at all. They might even confuse you further.

I would say try one and find out yourself. If you see a product you like, try it out. The quality between it and something else may not be as different as you may think. For instance, go to the site of one of the brands and see if they have something you like. If not, go to the next one. Then buy whatever you feel will work for you. Don't mean to come off as abrasive :) but you yourself knows better than anyone else what you need and want.

Mostly, the brand names are just "storefronts." Product quality mainly depends on the OEMs that have names you don't usually hear about. (Apparently Asus and MSI do make some of their own products).

The OEMs do the design, manufacturing process controls, component source selection, etc. so your laptop quality depends mostly on them. A "name" merchandiser may promote a menu of different models under their own brand name which they buy from several different OEMs in different countries. The point is, you can't generalize about the quality of laptops from a given brand name, because that brand name is selling various models manufactured by different OEMs. link

One thing to check out on is if drivers are updatable. For instance, dell's (no alienware) laptops will not allow you to update the drivers.
