Asus vs Abit for overclocking

I was planning on buying a Duron 850 to use on a Abit KT7 mb, but read about the prospects of overclocking the Duron & Athlon w/ the Asus mb, and was planing on that option until I read that you had to modify the board yourself now... My question is, is there no way to reach 1ghz+ with the Duron on a unmodified Asus or Abit? If not, can you buy pre-modified Asus boards at a fair price? Any other good boards you can suggest?
